Obstetrics is the medical specialty that deals with pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium, including risk situations that require surgical intervention. As a medical specialty, obstetrics is combined with gynecology under the discipline known as obstetrics and gynecology.
In several countries there is the profession of Obstetrics as a specialty dedicated to Sexual and Reproductive Health, directed by obstetrician professionals with skills in final care, diagnosis and treatment of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium under normal physiological conditions; who also focus on the preventive, promotional, teaching, healthcare and research areas.
